Awareness of Text Neck Syndrome among young adults

Abstract

Background: Habitual use of mobile devices causes a condition called text neck syndrome; it is characterized by pain and discomfort in the neck, shoulders and upper thoracic region also causes forward head posture and rounded shoulders with prolonged period. This research aimed to determine level of awareness regarding text neck syndrome among mobile phone users of age 18-24 years.

Methods: A cross-sectional study from February to August 2020, recruiting young adults aged 18 to 24 from different universities in Karachi, was carried out. A total of 376 students participated through non-probability convenience sampling. Data was gathered using a self-structed questionnaire and was analyzed using SPSS version 25. Frequency and percentages were shown through tables and graphs.

Results: Less than half, 43.88% of students, confirmed that they were aware of the text neck syndrome. Out of the total sample 48.94% reported that they had heard about text neck, but they lacked detailed knowledge regarding the text neck syndrome. It was noteworthy that 7.18% of participants indicated having no previous awareness or understanding of text neck syndrome.

Conclusion: Based on the date it appears that students were aware of the text neck syndrome that prolonged mobile phone use causes it. However, only a small number were aware of the whole comprehensive understanding of the text neck syndrome.
